Wake Forest’s season opener against UMBC at 8:00pm on Friday, Nov. 13, will also be the Demon Deacons’ third annual Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Classic. The Deacons will honor active duty and retired military personnel at the game, including offering free tickets to veterans and their families. To secure tickets, U.S. active personnel, veterans of any military service branch, retired military members or their family representatives should visit the designated table that will be set up in the LJVM Coliseum lobby the night of the game. Military I.D. must be presented to receive tickets.
In addition to providing free tickets, Wake Forest will recognize veterans and military personnel with announcements during the game. This year’s game honors the 50th Anniversary of Winston-Salem’s first and only Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Lawrence Joel, who has long been recognized as a symbol of valor.

Gateway Gallery to Present “Buy Some Cheer”

The event will feature small works of original art, fine crafts and gift items affordably priced for holiday gift-giving. A variety of hand-made ornaments may be purchased from a Holiday Dedication Tree. Holiday cards featuring reproductions of paintings by The Enrichment Center’s artists, known collectively as the Artists of Gateway Studios, will be available. The exhibition will include arts and crafts by the Artists of Gateway Studios and their guests: Sarah Kelly, Cindy Taplin, Nicole Uzzell, Alan Calhoun, Judi Russell, Suzie Cook, and John Golden. Artwork may be taken from the exhibition at the time of purchase. The evening will include live music by the Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Jonathan Wiseman. The Vagabond Saints Society Plays KISS

The VSS takes over the Garage for two nights: they’ll play Alive! on Friday night, followed by Alive II Saturday night!
Admission each night is $10 plus a canned good or non-perishable food item. All food collected will be donated to the FOX 8 Triad Holiday Food Drive to benefit The Salvation Army.

The Ladies Philoptochos Society will host its 58TH annual Fall Bake Sale at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. The bake sale offers traditional Greek pastries served throughout the day. Lunch and dinner are served beginning at 11 a.m. There is no charge for admission. 100 percent of the proceeds benefit local and national charities. The Ladies Philoptochos Society works diligently to give to those in need. Philoptochos literally means “friend of the poor.” The lunch and dinner menu includes Mousaka, Chicken Riganato with rice and Pork Souvlaki with rice. All are served with spanakopita, green beans, Greek salad, a roll and beverage. Pastries for sale include: Baklava, Koulourakia, Kourambiedes, Finikia, Loukoumades and many more. The pastries have been lovingly made by the ladies of the church. Gift boxes are available for sale and the pastries freeze nicely for upcoming holiday occasions.
Take-out orders are available, the day of the event, by calling 765-FOOD. If you love Greek food, you’ll love this bake sale.

7th Annual Matthew Gfeller Memorial Doughnut Run

Registration is open for the 7th Annual Matthew Gfeller Memorial Doughnut Run, scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 9:00 AM. The run will begin at R.J. Reynolds High School located at 301 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC.
The event celebrates Matthew Gfeller, a sophomore at R.J. Reynolds High School who died from a traumatic brain injury while playing in his first varsity football game in 2008. For more information, click HERE

A Day in the Life of a Cheesemaker

“Remembering John Biggers” Exhibition

Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts, presents, ” Remembering John Biggers ” an exhibition of prints and drawings by Dr. John T. Biggers (1924-2001), an African American muralist, painter and educator, November 3, 2015 thru January 30, 2016 at Delta Arts Center. The exhibit will feature works from Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts’ permanent collection and the works from private and public collections across the state. Reynoldstown Community Historic Marker to be Unveiled
A local historic marker commemorating the Reynoldstown community will be unveiled at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at the intersection of Cameron Avenue and Eighth Street. The community was built in 1919 by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as rent-to-own housing for its employees and featured vacant lots between the houses to be used as gardens. Decades later, houses were built on the side lots, giving the neighborhood a unique development pattern. Speakers at the unveiling will include Mayor Allen Joines; Council Members Vivian H. Burke and Derwin L. Montgomery; Carl Leak and Langdon Oppermann of the Historic Resources Commission and former resident James Grace.

SciWorks Hosts Adoption Awareness Day

In honor of National Adoption Awareness Month, SciWorks is working in partnership with the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina and Forsyth County Department of Social Services to host Adoption Awareness Day. Both of the involved agencies will provide resources about fostering and adopting at information booths from 1 to 3 p.m. There will also be a short presentation, with a question & answer session to follow, at 2 p.m. for anyone who would like to learn more about fostering and adoption. As part of the event, SciWorks is offering free admission (by invitation only) to families who have already adopted through these agencies, as well as through Family Services of Forsyth County. Twin City Stage presents Swingtime Canteen

It’s 1944 and movie legend Marian Ames and her gal pals from the Hollywood Canteen are heading to London to entertain the troops. Laughter, tears, air raids, and a celebration of women during the war punctuate this hilarious (and true!) story. Songs include “I’ll Be Seeing You”, “Sing Sing Sing”, and a fast-paced, 12-song Andrews Sisters medley. An Opening Night Reception, with wine provided by Raffaldini Vineyards, as well as hors d’oeuvres and sweets, will begin at 7 pm on Friday, November 13, in the lobby.

*Twin City Stage is celebrating the amazing men and women of the military forces during the run of this show. Veterans and active service members receive a 20% discount for any regular performance of Swingtime Canteen. Stained Glass Playhouse Presents “BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE”

Gillian Holroyd is unusual amongst her contemporaries; she can actually perform magic feats. She casts a spell over an unattached publisher, Stephen Henderson, partly to keep him away from a rival and partly because she is attracted to him. He falls head over heels in love with her at once and wants to marry her. As the attraction grows, she remembers that witches cannot fall in love.
