The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art has announced Justin Townes Earle as the headlining artist for the eleventh installment of its Crossroads @ SECCA concert series. Winston-Salem-based singer-songwriter Caleb Caudle will open the show.
In just the last year, Caleb Caudle has played over 300 shows in 30 plus states, performed on the web-radio sensation Daytrotter, and even found time to pack up all of his belongings to make the move from North Carolina to New Orleans and back.
Caudle’s last album, Tobacco Town, brought him national exposure upon its release in 2012, with Blurt Magazine noting “…jaw-droppingly fine songs steeped in classic Earle, Clark, McMurtry and Van Zandt.”
For his new album Paint Another Layer On My Heart, which was written out on the road, Caudle decided to record at Echo Mountain studios in Asheville, NC. Along with his producer and engineer, Jon Ashley (Dawes, Band Of Horses, The Avett Brothers), Caleb manages to craft a beautiful composition of his road-worn songs with some help from Lydia Loveless (harmony vocals), Whit Wright (pedal steel), Jordan Powers (bass), Greg Herndon (piano), Tommy Scifres (guitar), and Jack Foster (drums).
“Justin Townes Earle is one of the great young voices in American music today, and we couldn’t be any more excited to have him perform at Crossroads @ SECCA,” said Andy Tennille, a SECCA Foundation board member and curator of the Crossroads @ SECCA concert series. “We think the December 13th show featuring Justin and Caleb Caudle will be the perfect way to conclude our 2014 season, a year which featured both solo and duo performances from the likes of Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Hiss Golden Messenger and William Tyler.”
Once compared to a man who wears many suits, in thirty-two short years, Justin Townes Earle has experienced more than most, both personally and professionally. Between releasing four full-length, critically-acclaimed albums, constant touring, multiple stints in rehab, a new-found sobriety, being born Steve Earle’s son, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life, it’s safe to say JTE has quite the story to tell. His fifth album (and first ever on Vagrant Records) serves as the perfect platform for such narrations.
Entitled Single Mothers, the album is comprised of ten tracks that showcase exactly why Justin Townes Earle is considered a forefather of contemporary Americana. As a recently married, sober man, JTE writes from a point of maturity and content we’ve not seen before on past records. “One day I just realized it’s not cool to die young, and it’s even less cool to die after 30,” Justin states as he reflects on a life past and his newly found clarity. What he’s created is an album that’s raw, honest and personal in a way he hasn’t touched upon since his debut EP, Yuma.
Following the success of his critically-acclaimed-fifth-studio-album, Single Mothers, Justin is pleased to announce the release of the companion album, Absent Fathers. Comprised of 10 tracks, Absent Fathers was recorded alongside Single Mothers as a double album, but as Justin began to sequence it, he felt each half needed to make its own statement and they took on their own identities. Absent Fathers will be released January 13, 2015.
