In a magical kingdom fathoms below, we meet Ariel, the little mermaid who is tired of flipping her fins and longs to be part of the fascinating world on dry land. Joining her are Sebastian, Ariel’s crabby sidekick; Ursula, the evil sea witch; Triton, King of the Sea; and the handsome and human Prince Eric. Based on the Disney animated film and hit Broadway musical, The Little Mermaid is making its Triad community theatre debut. So dive on in! Life is the bubbles, under the sea!

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Part of Your World.”

The Theatre Alliance cast has Amanda Decker, recently seen as Vi Petty in Buddy, as everyone’s favorite mermaid, local favorites Parker Bond and Charity Hampton as Flounder and Sebastian, and familiar TA players John C. Wilson and Gray Smith as you’ve never seen them before – kindof – as Scuttle and Ursula. The show is directed by Jamie Lawson, music directed by David Lane, and choreographed by John C. Wilson, Mary Isom, and Jamie Lawson.

The Theatre Alliance cast is also featuring a few special new faces, participants from Industries for the Blind’s Student Enrichment Experience (SEE). SEE provides educational and enrichment opportunities for children and teens who are blind or visually impaired via after school programming, a summer day camp, and other activities at no cost to participants, thanks to the support of philanthropic dollars.

Decker is very happy to try on Ariel’s fins. “Ariel is a strong-willed girl who follows her heart and keeps working toward her dreams, despite several obstacles in her way,” says Decker. She adds, “As a youngster, I really admired Ariel’s passion, and I am so excited to perform this role with such an incredible cast. It’s the story you know, but with a few new surprises! Whether you are seeing it for the first time or the hundredth time, you will absolutely fall in love with the magic and charm of this classic tale – brought to life on the stage!”

Says Artistic Director Jamie Lawson, “The Little Mermaid is one of Disney’s most cherished ‘princess stories’ for good reason: great music, a good-triumphs-evil story, and a fairytail… ummm… fairytale that all ages can enjoy! Theatre Alliance is ready for its audiences to dive into the fun with them!”

The Little Mermaid will be performed at SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art), 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem, instead of at Theatre Alliance. SECCA is located at the end of Marguerite Drive, which is off of Reynolda Road (up the street from our regular theater).
